04 May Richard Butcher
Richard Butcher is a self-taught watercolour artist from Stirling, in the Adelaide Hills. He paints landscapes, seascapes and woodland scenes featuring a central light source. He appreciates and uses the contrast of lights and darks to generate drama in his watercolour pieces.
Richard uses a large, 45mm, Japanese Hake brush, thanks to discovering the technique through Ron Ranson’s YouTube demonstrations, known as ‘Big Brush Watercolour Technique’.
“I never realised watercolour could be painted with such freedom and excitement. The size of the hake forces you to simplify the subject and eliminates the details which I found so frustrating before,” he said.
Richard has worked in various paint media since his teenage years but had not found his niche in watercolours until 2017.
